Sustainability — Our Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

For Electric Yacht Komodo, sustainability is not a department or a marketing initiative; it is the fundamental principle upon which our company was built. Our mission is to prove that world-class luxury and genuine ecological preservation can coexist. We are committed to a model of tourism that actively protects the pristine environment of the Komodo National Park and empowers the local communities who are its traditional guardians. Our approach is holistic, transparent, and guided by measurable action.

Environmental Commitments: Preserving Paradise

Zero-Emission Propulsion & Clean Energy

The heart of our commitment is our state-of-the-art electric propulsion system. Unlike conventional yachts that burn thousands of liters of diesel, our vessel glides through the water in near silence, with zero engine emissions. This eliminates noise pollution that disturbs marine life and eradicates the release of greenhouse gases and harmful particulates into Komodo’s air and water. Our yacht is further equipped with high-efficiency solar panels that power all onboard auxiliary systems, from lighting to navigation, further reducing our carbon footprint.

Marine Conservation in Action

  • Financial Contributions: A dedicated percentage of every charter revenue is donated directly to our conservation partners, including the Komodo Survival Program and Manta Trust, funding critical research, patrols, and community outreach.
  • No-Anchor Policy: We exclusively use designated mooring buoys within the park to prevent anchor damage to fragile coral reefs. In areas without buoys, our experienced captains use advanced positioning techniques to avoid any contact with the seabed.
  • Reef-Safe Practices: We provide all guests with complimentary, high-quality, reef-safe sunscreen and educate them on the importance of avoiding products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.
  • Citizen Science: We actively participate in conservation initiatives, such as logging manta ray sightings for the Manta Trust’s database, turning every charter into a data-gathering opportunity.

Radical Waste Reduction

We have a strict zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics. All drinking water is produced onboard through a reverse-osmosis desalination system and served in reusable glass bottles. We work with our suppliers in Labuan Bajo to minimize packaging, and all unavoidable waste is meticulously sorted onboard and disposed of at certified facilities on land. We are constantly innovating to reduce our waste stream to an absolute minimum.

Community Commitments: Empowering Flores

Local Employment & Fair Wages

We believe the most impactful way to support the local community is through stable, high-quality employment. Over 80% of our crew, from our captains to our chefs and engineers, are hired from Labuan Bajo and the surrounding villages of Flores. We invest heavily in their training and professional development, offering wages and benefits—including full BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (social security and health) coverage—that are well above the industry standard. Our team is our family; their well-being is our priority. Meet some of them on our team page.

Sustainable Local Sourcing

Our menus are a celebration of Flores. We have built direct relationships with local organic farmers, fishermen’s cooperatives, and small-scale producers to source the freshest ingredients. This not only provides a superior culinary experience for our guests but also injects revenue directly into the local economy, reduces food miles, and supports sustainable agriculture.

Supporting Culture & Education

We facilitate respectful visits to local villages like Papagarang, ensuring that our presence is a positive one. We support the community by purchasing traditional handicrafts, such as hand-woven Tenun Ikat textiles, directly from the artisans at fair prices. Furthermore, we contribute to a local education fund that provides school supplies and scholarships for children in the communities closest to the park, investing in the next generation of Komodo’s guardians.

Our commitment is ongoing. We continuously review our practices, guided by our methodology, to find new ways to lighten our footprint and increase our positive impact. A journey with us is an investment in the future of Komodo.
